Five Minute Friday --Join

Five Minute Friday
It's Friday again, which means Five Minute Friday time... and I feel a little guilty linking up most weeks, because is it really FIVE minutes? when I spend all morning long ruminating on the word prompt? writing it out in my head only to think, "No, that's to negative, let's try again" or "that's too weird" or "That really has nothing to do with the word prompt".... or I can talk my self out of it time and time again ...

But it's Friday, and I love the ladies of the #FiveMinuteFriday community and today's prompt is JOIN, so how can I not?!?!

(last fall's photo shoot)

START

I've never been one for getting on the floor and playing with my kids, not so good a making up stories with dolls, coloring, creating with legos, or using my imagination. Not that my kids have been ignored, but I am definitely more of a "free-range parent." Something I have taken great advantage of since we live on the mountain and there are acres of playing land!

I'm the one that sends my kids out to run in the grass, jump in the leaves, play in the snow, (depending on the season) but it is rare that I join them (except for once, sledding, when I had more fun than they did!). However, sometimes it's good to be a kid again. To see things through the eyes of a child. To listen to them use THEIR imagination, which sometimes stimulates mine.

It's good to break out from the mold, the rigid rut of the inside, and get some fresh air. Run around the yard. Explore the property. Look for photography opportunities. To push the kids on the swing for a while. To help them and cheer them on as they ride their bikes. To walk and talk together.

Sometimes, I just need a little encouragement, a little push, a little reminder that there might still be a little kid inside of me, I just have to join the fun...

and join my kids outside! (at least the sun is shining)

STOP

I'm headed out to join them... and snap some pictures! I have an idea forming in my head that if it works will show up next week on the blog... be sure to come back!!

What do you need to JOIN, that you've been avoiding??!

  1. Beautiful, Julie!! So thrilled that I saw your blog entry just before mine. Our blogs seem to find each other often! Definitely going to join in on the fun with you! Thank you for the reminder, friend.

  2. I tend to send them out to play as well but my kids love it when I do get down on their level and play with them. Making forts in the living room or snowmen in the winter. I have to remember it goes by fast and before I know it, they'll be doing their own thing and have little time for forts and Lego and dolls. Can't wait to see what you have in store.

    1. Right away is definitely better than over thinking... Once my kids are back in school, I will do that, too! Keep coming to Five Minute Friday

  5. Hi Julie, I usually write out my 5minute post in my head too. I thought it was cheating so it was my little secret. I see now I'm in good company so I won't consider it cheating anymore. Thank you! Great pic of the kids in the leaves. Looking forward to see what you came up with today! This week I disconnected myself quite a bit from the internet so that I could join my kids in their lives. It was an eye opener for sure. My girls are super silly, maybe even sillier than me!
    Have a great weekend! :)

    1. I'm in need of an internet disconnect... maybe as the kids head back to school!

  6. What a great take on "join"! You're making memories, memories you'll treasure as the transition into adulthood.

  7. Oh, go out and play. I have very few memories of my mom actually playing with us and I loved it when she would. Can't wait to see what you have for next week from this. As far as "cheating", I generally think on the word for a while. I don't read any posts at all until after I link up mine - that's my loophole. Gotta say that I love recognizing almost every single name on your comments. Amazing!

    1. :) Thanks for visiting.... I'm beginning to realize it's not the # of comments that I get, but when I get comments from the same people over again, that makes me happy!! Now if I could just remember to return the favor!
