Five Minute Friday: Bare

Five Minute Friday
I didn't intend to stay up until midnight! I had grand plans of going to bed by 10pm... but I was working on these character sketches for my Creative Writing class... and then I popped on twitter and got swept up in the fellowship and encouragement that is the #FMFParty... and before I knew it, it was 11:30 so I figured I'd just stick it out and see what I could come up with at midnight for five minutes on the prompt... (even though my brain doesn't work well this late at night!)

Five Minute Friday: Bare

The trees are bare, the air is bare, my soul is bare... I'm not a huge fan of the late fall, early winter, dry winter.  I sink into darkness, I miss the sunshine. My heart is bare. (and my mind is a little bare, too)

I've never been a huge fan of snow (funny, because I grew up near Buffalo, NY). and last winter, I didn't complain at all that it barely snowed twice all season long.

But this year, I'm ready for a good snow storm... like 2 or more feet of snow. Now that the kids can go out and play in the snow for hours on end, I'm ready.  Enough of these wimpy 3-4 inches of snow that are just a nuisance and disappear before you can really enjoy them.  Give me a snow that lasts for 2 weeks.

That's it. Then I will be ready for spring, for green and flowers, and buds and birds, and freshness all around.

and some sunshine that lasts all day and warms and fills this bare soul of mine.

Are you bare? Will you share your 5 minutes on the prompt bare? ... or you can just leave me a one word sentence in the comments on bare... (I dare you)

Project 52 --Cabin Fever

So, this has pretty much been the most mild winter I can ever remember... so far!! I know it could change in the next month. But still, any time it snows, it melts within 24 hours and that's just not normal! That being said... I am NOT complaining! This girl loves the sun, is not a fan of the cold, and enjoys ONE good snowfall a year.

This week's theme for Project 52 is Cabin Fever. We haven't really had much opportunity for cabin fever around here. The kids have been outside a lot more than usual and without all the snow pants and boots and paraphernalia! So I am counting my blessings for lots of blue skies and sunshine around these parts...

ps.  I took this picture yesterday afternoon... today it's gray, cold, and rainy!

Ice Festival tradition

I don't know about you, but I expect traditions to go perfectly... if it's a tradition it must be a happy memory, right? But then if I think it should be perfect, chances are it won't and I'll get mad, miscommunications will happen, and I will probably cry... the good news is that even though I was exhausted at the end of the day, we had a great time and to look at the pictures you would never know we started out rough!! :) Our local town has an ice festival every February and we have been going for the last four years!! so here's 10 pictures of the day for Top Ten Tuesday!
Top Ten Tuesday at Many Little Blessings

1. We always start the day at Krispy Kreme for breakfast...

2. although it wasn't super cold, the kids were "freezing" before we even started! :)

3. We rounded the first corner... and almost ran into Frosty... literally! :)

4. my little ballerinas with the ice skater (it was a London/Olympics theme this year)

5. Our annual family photo... this year with Big Ben (the ice sculpture sponsored by my husband's place of employment!)

6. another great photo opportunity on the medals podium... my son was none too happy about not being on top!

7. Ella saw this sculpture of Michael Jordan and immediately tried to copy the pose... maybe I have a future basketball star in my mix?!

8. Buckingham Palace...

9. catching a Live ice carving of a bobsled!

10. at this point, we were all pretty tired, but we made one more stop which is more a festival for kids (and it's indoors). They had Walking Tacos, which were awesome and the kids all got their faces painted!!

We do this every year and it isn't always perfect, but my kids talk about it ALL YEAR LONG... so I know the happy memories outweigh the rough patches!! :)

PS... I am also linking up to Sweet Shot Tuesday because my kids are so sweet... and I can't choose my favorite! :)

Five Minute Friday --Awake

It's another Friday, another chance for Five Minute Friday, a chance for me to work on my writing skills... in Five Minutes Flat.

I always have a hard time with the "no editing" part, and sometimes I have a hard time even filling five minutes, while other times five minutes is not enough! But it's still always fun ... you should give it a try!!

This week, the prompt is AWAKE

I'm not a fan of cold and snow and winter... which is kinda funny because I grew up near Buffalo, NY... or maybe it's because I grew up there.  So I have to say, I haven't been too upset with the winter we are having. One freak snowstorm in October, one NASTY icy storm on a Wednesday night in December, and that's been IT!  Isn't Winter almost half over... okay, not really but I can dream!  I've been feeding the chickens in a sweatshirt, no coat required!

The forecast for today was a little iffy, there was a chance of snow and I was ALMOST looking for it. but not quite!  So when I woke up this morning to rain I was okay with that.  Our normal getting ready for school routine went better than usual, so much so that I had time to put the girls hair in pigtails! and they were ready to go 15 minutes before leave for school time.

and then it came...  white puffy flakes floating through the sky and little children shouting with excitement, "It's SNOWING!"  and everything became sparkly white and the kid in me AWOKE just a little bit at the excitement of my kids over snow!

AWAKE! Winter might finally be here!  Here's to a weekend of playing in the snow... maybe!
